Logistics

A superior product that promises operational efficiencies demands a highly efficient logistics environment to meet customers’ production timelines. While Kumba does not own the full line from mine to rail to port, it is increasingly involved in the logistics value chain to ensure that it delivers on its promises.
Existing free on board (FOB) services have been extended to include cost, insurance and freight (CIF) and a substantial proportion of Kumba’s total exports are now delivered to the customer’s gate. This involvement from production to doorstep to deliver a premium product gives credibility to Kumba’s stated aim of being a value-adding iron ore supplier to its customers.
Port operations at Saldanha sample the consistency of the iron ore by means of an automatic sampling plant to JIS and ISO standards. The accredited independent laboratory enables final quality to be determined at load port and meet global contract standards. Kumba is an accredited ISO9001 producer, with a laboratory that is ISO17025 accredited. The company also has ISO18000 and ISO14001 environmental accreditation.
Rail infrastructure
The 861km rail system that links Sishen Mine to the dedicated deepwater port and bulk loading facilities at Saldanha Bay is one of the most efficient and advanced logistical systems for the handling and loading of iron
ore in the world. Owned and operated by Transnet (the South African parastatal transport company), the
system is a model of integrated planning and cooperation between the public and private sectors in South Africa. Transnet is committed to expanding the Sishen-Saldanha iron ore export channel from 47Mtpa to 60Mtpa: 9Mtpa of which has been allocated to Kumba for the development of Kolomela. The iron ore export channel expansion represents a capital investment of over US$500 million in real terms by Transnet for additional rolling stock, upgrading electricity infrastructure, and constructing bypass loops and a 36km rail link by 2012 to service the new mine. Rail wagons have already been upgraded to 100 tons each and a train comprises 342 wagons. Nineteen passing loops are operational.

Port infrastructure
The port at Saldanha Bay is the only dedicated iron ore export facility in South Africa and is larger than the country’s other four major ports combined. Its proximity to Sishen Mine and Kolomela, linked by rail, makes it the gateway of choice for exporting seaborne iron ore to Kumba’s international customers. Operating 24/7, the port has a loading capacity of around 8 000 tons an hour, with peaks up to 10 000 tons an hour. The ore quay at Saldanha has two berths where two ships of 350 000 DWT can simultaneously berth at the iron ore jetty. The first phase of the port expansion and upgrading of equipment and infrastructure is well under way.
Kumba has renewed its long-standing agreement with the Qingdao Port Authority for the handling and use of iron ore stockpile facilities at Qianwan Port in the city of Qingdao. From here Kumba can readily supply
steelmaking plants operating in the world’s fastest growing region as well as to other countries in the Asian Basin. Second and third-tier customers in China benefit most from the proximity of the stockpiling area at Qianwan port, experiencing faster turnaround times and the flexibility of ordering smaller quantities. |
