Kumba Iron Ore is an African company that enriches the lives of South Africans while bringing superior quality iron ore to the international market. It is part of the global Anglo American plc group of companies.

Kumba Iron Ore is a pure play iron company that believes that sustainability depends on partnerships with stakeholders at every level. The company’s corporate governance is driven by principles of fairness, accountability, responsibility and transparency. A zero harm approach guides its policies, procedures and actions. Kumba’s corporate social responsibility programmes are integrated into its business strategies, reporting structures and performance management systems.

Kumba Iron Ore was created in the unbundling of Kumba Resources in 2006, and runs iron ore mines and beneficiation plants at Sishen and Thabazimbi and is developing the Sishen South Mine. Kumba Iron Ore is set to meet international demand for superior quality iron ore with a strategic expansion plan in South Africa and into Africa. An expansion at Sishen (the Jig Plant) has recently been completed, and further mining opportunities in Guinea are being investigated. Through its carefully managed growth strategy Kumba Iron Ore aims to double its export production capacity by 2013.

There is a particularly strong demand for Kumba’s iron ore internationally because it boasts a high iron content, it is resistant to physical degradation during transportation and handling, and it has a low moisture content.
