Sishen South Project

Graphic

Sishen South Project ...is one of Kumba’s megaprojects with an asset of R8,462 billion. Its first shipment of Iron ore is expected to leave Saldanah for China in 2012.will produce 9 million tons of iron ore each year once the project is completed and will double Kumba’s current output by 2015.

Trucks ... diesel powered Komatsu 730E  move 200tons of waste per load and CAT 777 100ton of ore per load (the first set of mobile equipment has been commission at Sishe on 24 March 2009 and these equipment will be used for operational training and will be moved to Sishen South site in the second half of 2009.)

The mine ...is strategically placed in one of the prime iron ore mining districts of the Northern Cape with immediate access to well developed infrastructure that could facilitate additional production of iron ore when upgraded.  The mine will produce 9 million tons of iron ore each year once the project is completed and will help to double Kumba’s current output by 2015. The final product will be railed over the 861km Sishen-Saldanah line to join the stream of ore destined for export from the terminal at Saldanah Bay.

Sishen South….. will use approximately 20% of the capacity of the 861km Sishen-Saldanha railway line and associated export facilities.

Number of staff ... the mine will stabilize with approximately 750 employees permanent employees

Total tonnage produced ... 9 million tons of iron ore annually by 2013 will be produced

Safety record ... Unfortunately Sishen South experienced one fatality during a road building activity early in 2008

Sishen South Project is environmentally, technically and economically viable on a macroeconomic level, and presents enormous potential and growth.
