Kumba is the only hematite ore producer in the world to wholly beneficiate its product. This is made
possible through dense medium separation (DMS) and jig technology. At Sishen Mine the ore from
the pit is trucked to the DMS plant where it is crushed, washed and separated into coarse, medium
and fine material by wet screening. The graded ore passes through a heavy medium separation
process where waste particles are separated from high-grade ore to achieve the desired iron
content. Beneficiated ore is continuously blended onto product stockpiles to maintain consistent
quality. The use of new jig beneficiation technology is used to process lower-grade ore that was
previously discarded, into 64% Fe lump specifically for blast furnace use. While having a slightly
lower iron content than other Kumba products, it shares their excellent physical properties. The jig
plant is on schedule to reach full production of 13Mtpa in 2010.
Even Kumba’s fine ore is blended and is coarser than other sinter fines products. This fine ore
counters the increasing supply of finer sinter feed into the market, with one Australian iron ore
consultant stating that “Kumba’s fine ore is regarded as the best sintering ore on the market”.
