This customer-centric focus drives all initiatives within the company so that Kumba can evolve from simply being an efficient miner of iron ore to becoming a value-adding strategic supplier of iron ore.

These words epitomise the company’s approach to business – an approach that is as unique as its product. Even in a high-consumption market such as the 2002–2008 commodities boom, the company did not thrive merely by falling into the slipstream of demand. Kumba has never been a mainstream player in the iron ore industry, preferring to prioritise quality rather than quantity, and in the process focusing on anticipating the needs of a select range of customers.

This mindscape has changed the iron ore landscape. The physical properties of its African iron ore have enabled Kumba to create niche products that enhance operational efficiencies for its steelmaking customers.
